چکیده

We can outperform the most powerful disk spin-down algorithm available by using a small non-volatile storage write-only cache to temporarily store hard disk write requests while a disk is spun-down. In our experiments, we use a USB thumb drive device as our non-volatile storage cache. By redirecting writes to a flash memory while a disk is spun-down we avoid costly hard disk cycle start-stop operations, thus increasing hard disk reliability and reducing energy consumption. We also show that such a storage cache is necessary to provide feasible performance from a disk spin-down algorithm in a general purpose operating environment. The problem arises from typical general purpose operating system applications generating periodic disk activity while a system is not in use. By using small, cheap, and nonvolatile flash memory we can improve the energy savings of a highly adaptive machine learning disk spin-down algorithm by 36%, and the 15 and 45 second fixed-timeout algorithm by 57% and 46%, respectively. We can also reduce the relative fraction of hard disk ”contact start-stop cycles” by 80% for the DSA algorithm, and with the 15 and 45 second fixed-timeout algorithm 79% and 73%, respectively.

Non-Volatile Memory: Emerging Technologies And Their Impacts on Memory Systems

For almost 30 years, computer memory systems have been essentially the same: volatile, high speed memory technologies like SRAM and DRAM used for cache and main memory; magnetic disks for high-end data storage; and persistent, low speed ash memory for storage with low capacity/low energy consumption requirements such as embedded/mobile devices. Today we watch the emergence of new non-volatile m...

A Memory-Disk Integrated Non-volatile Memory System with its Dual Buffering Adapter

In this paper, conventional main memory and disk storage layers are merged into a single memory layer using a combination of PRAM and NAND Flash memories, which is called as an integrated memory-disk (IM-D) non-volatile memory structure. The IM-D memory architecture consists of a dual buffering IM-D adapter, an array of SLC/MLC PRAM/Flash hybrid IM-D memory, and an associated memory management ...

Comparison of Energy and Performance Efficiency of Recent Cache Configuration Trends and Designs

Over the past ten years cache configurations and their designs have increased in importance, energy efficiency, speed, and in other aspects as well. The goal of this paper is to discuss the energy and performance efficiency of different cache designs throughout the years. A good scale efficiency for a cache could be considered a measure of its latency and energy consumption. To optimize cache e...

A Cache Management Scheme for Object-based Storage

This paper presents a cache management scheme for object-based storage, which consists of three main aspects. First, the cache update policy is proposed. The strategy considers the overall cache as a pool, consistency and accuracy of updating is ensured through the locking mechanism, while using Bloom Filter combined with the updated time series to achieve updating simplification. Secondly, the...

A Study on the Challenges and Prospects of PCM Based Main Memory Architectures

For several decades, computer’s memory has been volatile. High speed memories such as DRAM and SRAM have been used as main memory and cache memory respectively. Magnetic disks are used as the persistent secondary storage devices. The present DRAM based main memory has reached its energy limits. Due to the advent of nonvolatile memories like PCM, MRAM, RRAM, FeRAM and Flash, there is growing int...
